In the late sixties, Laugh-In wasn't only a fastpaced gagbased sketch program, but also a Sunday only gagbased newspaper strip by Roy Doty. Doty was a popular cartoonist in his day. So popular in fact, that he pretty soon became old hat and a representatvive of his age. And since his age ran into the seventies, Laugh-In as about the best example of his talents you can find.
Oh I love Roy Doty. I first discovered him years ago in his Wordless Workshop feature in Popular Science magazine. Many of them were even collected in a book that's worth hunting down. He's still with us, too.

ReplyDeleteI notice the Laugh-In strip is apparently hamstrung by Doty's inability to use the likenesses or characters of the TV cast (not even the tricycle guy - at least he was on the Laugh-In lunchbox) nor the catchphrases.
