Just The Type

 Sunday Little Bit Extra Day.

In the old days there were many ways for illustrators and cartoonists to earn a little extra. They had their regular clients, but every once in a while a magazine called for a special piece. Someone who never said no to a little bit of extra income, was the revered theatre and movie caricaturist Al Hirschfeld. He did spot illusytrations for Collier's, illustrated stories by S. J. Perelman for various magazines and covers and more for The TV Guide. In the January 1949 Issue of Holiday, he illustrated a section on Hollywood with this three page beauty. The Hirschfeld Foundation menstions some of the work Hirschfeld did for the magazine, but not this piece (and what others?).

Ha! Indeed!

Tuesday Good Newsday.

I am always interested in finding new published material by the rgeat cartoonist Al Hirschfeld. And although there are several book collections of his work, I always have the impression that not even half of his work has been collected. Here is the first chapter of the novelisation of the book Westward Ha! by S. J. Perelman and illustrated by Hirschfeld in the woman's magazine Redbook (which is now available on The Internet Archive for those years). There was a book made from this, but from what I can see, I am not sure if all the drawings were used or even if some of them were redrawn. To start, I pulled the first chapter, which also happens to be from one of the few color issues on that platform.
