Saturday Leftover Day.
From last week I am following a new format for The Fabulous Fifties. On Sundays there will be new scans of strips I have shown and written about before. On Mondays there will be strips you have not seen before. And onSaturdays I will continue with oddities, rarities and other loose ends. Pick your day, come round often and feel free to comment. I have also started creating new superposts collecting series I have shown many times before in chronoligical order. But as you can imagnie that takes a bit of time.
So for today we have an oddity. At the hight of the Batman craze in the fifties, every one wanted in on the act. So Woolwroth's decided to include Batman and Superman in their Halloween costume line-up that year. At a full page it seems to me like the perfect collectable for any Batman collector who actually has one of those costumes. Identify yourself and we'll work out a way to get it to you.
The Batman in this drawing is similar to the Batman in the comic strips at that time, which was designed (though at that point no longer drawn) by Carmine Infantino. The rest of the poster isn't so I am guessing this is a swipe as well.
With that I have an article from the shortlived magazine '47/'48, a digest sized cultural magazine that was named after the year it was ublished (hence the chaning title). It features the first use of the Pow! Zowie! headline that was used on every article about comics until well into 2000, supposedly taken from the fight cards in the Batman tv show. Turns out it had been around a bit longer than anyone thinks. Fellow Comic Book Historian Bob hughes invormed me that he has seen it as early a 1927 on a cover of Life magazine (then still a Punchlike cartoon magazine) and that it came from The Katzanjammer Kids. Adjust your history books accordingly.

Giving Away Prizes!
Hi, Halloween Lovers! Today we announce the prize winners of the contest organized by Yoe Books and IDW. Together with the four blogs and sites mentioned below, they are giving away five books from the Yoe Books collection. In total 146 people entered their name at my special email adress and one came in late and was allowed to join by a special commission made up by me and myself. I forced a zombie to eat all the entries and then randomly picked one out when he couldn't keep it down. We said it would be gruesome and believe me, it was! The winner of the on ebook I was allowed to give away is announced below. Unfortunately it was someone who didn't leave his ground adress, so please get in touch with me at the same email adress as the contest used and I will take care that everything will be arranged for you when I get back from my trip to the comic festival in Lucca next Sunday.
These were the sites. Go there to see who the other winners is and if you like horror comics, please add them to you list.

Final Days
Yesterday I showed two Mort meskin stories and mentioned a third without showing it. I wanted to say that Meskin also did a couple of stories for Standard with George Roussos, also including one upublished story, the original art of which I found at Greg Land's galery at Comic Art Fans. Wouldn't it be great to see this in color?

Haunted Halloween
Another artist I keep hinting should be used more in Craig Yoe excellent Archive of Horror Comics and the comic one of the books is based on, Haunted Horror, is of course Mort Meskin. I know he didn't do a lot of horror stories and most of his stuff is more psychological horoor, but the few he did are all very well told and among his best work form the fifties. Apart from doing Your Dream of Dreams, he did a couple of horror fillers for Prizes Frankenstein and a few for Harvey (two of which remained unpublished and may be his best, such as the often reprinted MacBeth). The published Harvey story I am showing here is from one of the first post-code issues of Black Cat Mystery and it shows. The penultimate panel of the story will probably have features some horrific scene of revenge. In the scramble to make the deadline, the editors at Harvey couldn't think of anything but cutting the offending panel out. Wouldn't it be great to turn this into a contest and have the readers of Haunted Horror provide their own image?

Happy Halloward
To keep the special Halloween contest by Craig Yoe and IDW up here where it belongs, I am showing horror stories all week. If you are from the mainland of the US be sure to enter this contest, because the prizes are fenomenal. These books by Craig are great and they won him the 4th Annual Jerry Bails Award For Excellence in Comics Fandom only this week.
But I do have abone to pick with Craig. I mean, great books. And jack Cole, Bob Powell, they were all deserving of these books. But where is the collection of Howard Nostrand stories? I know most of Nostrand's work for the Harvey horror titles (if not all) have been reprinted quite well by PS Books, but imagine how they would look in Craig's slightly oversized format how well one of his heads would do on those covers. And of course, Craig would be able to do an introduction and then he would have to come to me for some scans of Nostrand's newspaper work and I would get a free sample...

In honor of the ongoing Halloween promotion of my friend Craig Yoe, I am giving you another horror treat instead of the normal fare. I will try and keep this contest (with FREE PRIZES) on top of my blog for as long as the promotions runs, adding a different story everytime. In honor of Jack Cole, who is the artist of one of the books, I am showing a little know gem from Web of Evil.
