Cracking Partch
Friday Very Important Day.
Between 1944 and 1948 Virgil Partch (VIP) was one of the regular contributors to the Crackups daily cartoon series that ran in the liberal New York PM newspaper. He filled the Sunday slot in PM (which was actually their 'weekend' paper which combined Saturdays and Sundays). Other papers also ran it, which is great because the micro-fiche availabillity of PM is not very good and what there is is often scratched as well. This year I ran into a source that actuaally ad most of the Crackups run and I proceeded to try and find all the VIP cartoons. Here is everything I have from 1944. I still have to see if there were more in PM before the Chicago Sun started running them, but by this count Partch did 20 in the second half of that year. Some are missing, but they were missing for the paper as well.

One Day It's Christmas
Monday Christmas Day.
It's Christmas Day and I realize I can't count. This should be my One Day Before Christmas Post, but here we are. Luckily, I prepared two lots, one for today and one for tomorrow. Christmas gags aren't as common as one would think, but I did manage to find a couple of favorites. The Walt Kelly cartoon is on eof the better prints I got from his short run on the New Yor Star as political cartoonist (which is where he did his first newspaper version of Pogo as well).

The Clowns Of War
Friday Potluck.
Today, from my new scanner, I updated a single Sunday page of the rare war strip Vic Jordan by Elmer Wexler to a larger post I have done about this remarkably adult strip a couple of months ago. For that post I was relying on a run of newspaper microfiche scans of PM Newspaper, that were pretty good as far as those things of. But for the Sunday page it is always a compromise. So I was very glad to get this one sample of a colour Sunday. As an added bonus, it immediately follows after the month of dailies and black and white Sundays I have posted before that and it features a group of heroes saving some people from a German concentration camp dressed as clowns!. Not only is the story pretty weird, as I said at the time, it confirms for those who didn't know that the word 'concentration camp' was already knows even before America joined the war. We just didn't know yet what it actually meant. Here is the new Sunday with the preceding week of dailies. For more follow the label.

No Laughing Matter
Thursday Story Strip Day.
A couple of weeks ago I showed the first month of Andrew Paine and Elmer Wexler's Vic Jordan strip from, an exciting an extremely realistic spy strip from the rare PM Newspaper. This time we have the whole of January 1942 wher we see Vic rescuing some friend from the French resistance from a 'concentration camp'. Apparently the name was known as ealry as then, although it seems it was taken to be some sort of prison camp, instead of what we now know. I have added one of the rare signed advertising strips by Wexler from the early fifties where he used a remarkably similar clown...
