Chicago Rock

Tuesday Comic Strip Day.

Two more delightfull instalments of Frank Engli's Rocky, which started as a feature unique to the Chicago Tribune's fold-in comic book section of the early forties, but was syndicated outside of that as well.

Play Time in Philadelphia

Monday Cartoon Day.

I have been sharing scans of the Philadelphia Record's Fun Book Sunday Section, a combination comic strip section/games section for the kiddies. Toward 1950, it was changed to a more regular comic section, losing it's own cover drawing. But the games features remained, some syndicated and some drawn especially for the paper - by whoever was around, I guess. Regular contributors included later satirical strip artist Morrie Brickman.

Funny Because It Is True

Sunday Meskin Measures.

Mort Meskin biographer Steven Brower has said that at some point Meskin joined George Roussos in producing his annual General Electric booklets. I see no evindence of him here. In fcat, this one me be mostly Roussos by himself. Even the funny figures look like te one he showed in one of his later interviews.

A Mix Of Characters

Saturday Leftover Day.

Of course, DC was not the only company using gag pages as filler. Fawcette's Tom Mix Western comics has a couple of fillers by different artists. Cowboy Cal was one of the most frequent. The artist is said to be Al Liederman, who works in a nice sharp cartoon style which you see evolve over the first few episodes.

One Man Gag Factory

Friday Comic Book Day.

Last week I shared some of the Henry Boltinoff filler pages for a couple of DC titles, including Tomahawk #1-10. Here are the cartoons he did for Tomahawk #11-41. And that's just one title.
