Sunday Link Day
I have shown more of the late fifties/early sixties strip City Hall. It was written by Donoby and drawn by Will-Yum artist Dave Gerard (with Donohy taking over solo in the last years). But I have never found many color samples, which is why I was very pleased two turned up in a recent buy. City Hall fits the satirical mood of that period, but it also has a healthy dose of slapstick and character. At least now I n[know which Paper I need to get complete.

Yummie Funny
Tuesday Comic Strip Day.
Despite the look of his work, Dave Gerard was not one of the younger lot of artists. He started in the early forties and was way ahead of gouys like Mort Walker in his style, one of the first not to rely on the standard comic strip art course learned comic style. His strip Will-Yum florished in the fifties, but ran in to sixties.

Love In My Yummie
Tuesday Comic Strip Day.
I don't come across as many Will-Yum strips as I used to. So here are some I gathered at odd places here and there. Stylistiscly and temperementally this kid strip is somewhere between Dennis the Menace and Bus Blake's later Tiger. For more follow the link.

The Yum-Yum Kid
Thursday Comic Strip Day.
To go with yesterday's Dave Gerard cartoons, here is an overview of his strip Will-Yum, which started in the early fifties and ran until the late sixties. As cute as it may seem to us now, in it's own time it may have gone on a bit too long and have been a bit old hat towards the end.

Cartoons With A View
Monday Cartoon Day.
Dave Gerard started selling cartoons in 1932. His his/her cartoon Viewpoint was a regular feature in Collier's before he turned it into a daily panel. After that he launched Will-Yum. In the late fifties he added a series called City Hall. I have shown both here in michrofiche and original scans. I have a huge load of new magazines waiting to be scanned with lots of cartoons by all my favorites (Walker, Ketcham and Gerard) as well as illustrated biograhies of Walker and Gerard. I will try and ad Gerard's piece tomorrow. I kove his loose line, surprisingly modern for his time and age. I wonder how much he influenced Mort Walker.
