Chibobba chibobba....

Monday Cartoon Day.

Last week I showed you a two page cartoon report of the Miss California competition by Hank Ketcham. This week I have another early piece of cartoon journalism by Harvey Kurtzman. Kurtzman liked this form and used it on all sorts of different occasions. This is his ealriest piece. It's from the late fifties and as far as I can see, it was done after Shel Silverstein made the form into a succes with his travel pieces in Playboy. So I don't know how Kurtzman sold this idea to the TV Guide. It was the only thing he did for them and there was very little he could refer to to give them an image of what they were getting.

So who wants to see Kurtzman's other cartoon journalism pieces?

I badly want to see some more of them.

yeah, i second that. interesting stuff. seems less assured than the regular kurtzman stuff from that era, less bravado, more sniffing around to see what people respond to...

Very nice, thanks.
What's the date on this?

As for the date, I actually mislaid my indispensable Glen Bray catalogue... but it's somewhere in the late fifties. as for the style... that was Kurtzman's style after Mad. He never went back to the inking style of Hey Look. I will continue this series on mondays, but I hope you will a. all buy the new Humbug edition that is due from Fantagraphics and Denis Kitchen. And b. will buy the utimate Kurtzman coffee table book containing all of this material when if finally doesn come out (from Denis Kitchen and any publisher who will have it). Denis is the executor of Kurtzman's estate and is trying to find the best publisher for all of this material - and if and when he publishes he wil try and include all sorts of extra's (like the sketches HK did for everything) which I would love to see.

In fact, I would love to see if we can give the Humbug book a boost on Amazon when it's out. There are two ways - either you all pre-order it now and it will get a high rating out of the gate. Or we agree on a ordering date when it's out and give it a one day ratings boost.
