The Festival Of The Krackling Man

Jack Kirby Special 5

Today a longer story and a pretty important one. In the opinion of some this is the first real appearance of Kirby Kackle and I am one of them. I think Kirby had seen some pictures of solor flares and used those as a graphic shorthand to show flames against a black sky. This later evolved into his way of depecting all sorts of energy, first in space later anywhere. The cover, by another artist, shows how inventive Kirby's way of representing this burning man was.

I grew up reading my big brothers copies of Fantastic Four and others from the "Kirby Age" and have been drawn to him since I was old enough to turn the pages of a comic book. I'm amazed I can still see stuff I've never seen before...so prolific.

And not a dud in the bunch. Long Live the King!

SO, how, perhaps, did this story fit into the brainstorming that created Negative Man in DC's DOOM PATROL?

Too bad we don't know te writers of any of these stories.

DC's Doom Patrol is a pretty blatant copy of Marvel's FF, with the twist that all of the members are seen as freaks. This in turn led to Marvel creating the X-Men, and using the one original concept utilized by the Doom Patrol. Tit for tat.
