Short Ribs was designed to feature different gag situations, to provide more variety for the readers. But this meant no permanent characters could be develped and most of the strips were based around the gags - which meant that after a certain time they all started to look alike. It started earlier than I would have thought - my earliest daily is from 1958. The color Sundays underneath are quite aerly as well.
