Saturday Leftover Day.
When my friend Mike Vassallo shared some early dailies from the silent strip Louie, I went and had a look to see how this very funny and long running series about the normal strife a married slob who never got a break started. Specifically, I wanted to have a look to see how and when all the regular elements (the fact that he never had a job, that he was married to a dominearing wife) were set in place. It seems at least the wife was a later addition, not apprearing until after a few months. Having a very small set of circomstances actually helped the strip focus and get funnier.

I read Louie as a child in the 1960s, by which time he might have been a little stouter than shown in these strips. The silent gags were of the same variety. I'm fascinated by the idea of the mental discipline it takes to come up with all these visual jokes over the years.
