Friday comic book day
I was going to treat you to a sampling of Klaus Nordling's work on The Barker today, but when I sat down to do the scanning I noticed that in the same book, there was a signed short story by Gil Fox as well. Granny Gumshoe rans for a couple of issues in National Comics, before Gill Fox took over as the artist on The Barker. You can see Nordling's influence on his style (or you will be able to when I have shown some of that), as well as some tricks he picked up from Jack Cole. The story itself is quite charming, if a bit silly. It's nice to see a forerunner of Jessica Fletcher do so well.

One has to wonder why The Lump would even bother escaping prison to just stand still inside a wax museum instead. But the cool thing about this one is it actually makes good use of the wax museum setting and the other wax figures actually play roles instead of just serving as background dressing or atmosphere. Nice story.
You're too kind. I think the story is not half as interesting as the concept of the series. I will look around to see if there is a better one. alex Kotzky said in an interview that many artists at Quality wrote their own stories and that is certainly true for The Barker... but here I guess it is just work for hire by Fox. I picked this one, because I do like the style of it - the weird villian and granny herself.
