Welcome back!

Monday cartoon day.

I will be treading water this week, to try and organize my scanning for the next few weeks. So no new artists this week, only more new and unreprinted material from the same group of artists I have been writing about. This saves me time in writing the commentaries, you see.

Today we start with a couple more Mort Walker cartoons. He was really prolific up till 1952. These samples are all from the Saturday Evening Post, where he often had two cartoons a week in 1950 and 1951. My guess is the 1951 cartoons here were done just before he sold the Beetle Bailey comic strip. I have yet to come across any 'Spider' cartoons. Apparently he stopped doing those cartoons about the forerunner of Bailey when he knew he was going to turn him into a comic strip of his own.

Welcome back! There are five 'Spider' in Walker's book "Backstage at the Strips" but those are the only ones I've seen.

I lend my Backstage at the Strips to someone years ago and never got it back. A very important book. I now have Mort Walker's Scrapbook, which probably has a couple of Spiders as well. What surprises me is the fact that I never came across any myself.

Welcome back Ger, hope you had a nice blogger break. And a good way to get back into it today too, these gags are all great.

Still holding your THOIA shirt for you too. Let me know.
