A special section of the audience a cartoonist can aim his cartoons at. Usually it is a subject or an area no other cartoonist has ever tried tor each before, usually because no one is interested.
I note that the cartoonist here indicates the final phoneme of “verbosity” and of “apothecary” with ‘ĭ’, id est as /ɪ/. In fact, by the time of these cartoons, only a few pretentious lexicographers were doing that; the prevailing sound had long been /i/ (‘ē’).
I am a Dutch television writer, who has written about comics and television for a number of publications here in Holland and in the US. I love hearing from (forgotten) artists and/or their relatives, so if you are one of those and happen upon this blog, please leave a note.
