Farewell to Partch

Monday Cartoon Day.

Don't you love these Virgil Partch cartoons? These are all from Collier's. Someone should do a book on them...

VIP cartoons are almost always drawn in a high perspective (looking down on the subjects) and never have any tangents (lines intersecting with the main characters). His drawings "read" instantly. Sure his quirky style is instantly recognizable but these subtle composition elements make him a head and shoulders above the other Collier cartoonists at the time.

Not to mention the fact that most of his jokes are laugh out loud funny. I think he operated from the standpoint: if it can't be funny let it at least be weird. That way, when the humor clicks it is instantly laughworthy. Apart from the elements of draftmanship (which he shared with fellow Disney refugee Hank Ketcham) his work is the opposite of safe.

Love this stuff! Partch is one of my all-time favorite cartoonists. And you're right - he's simply laugh out loud funny.

Thanks for posting these!

More to come! This is just the Vip of the iceberg.
