Saturday Leftover Day.
month ago I shared with you an original sketch Jack Kirby did for the cover of Foxhole #1. After doing that sketch, he and Joe Simon changed the concept to include a larger close-up of a wounded soldier. But I always admired that original sketch and hoped that some day I would see it inked.
I offered that as a challange to my readers, hoping many would try. Well, even though one of the visitors that day came here through Kevin Nowlan's blog page (and if it was Kevin himself I ma honored to have him as a simi-regular) only you one of you came through and I am very grateful for that. I wanted to wait and see if any more artists or students in art would follow, but it wouldn't be fair to the one guy who did send in to wait any longer. So with many thanks, here's to Bah Boy my wish come through.
I don't know if he wants to be named here, since he didn't sign it. But he does have a blog I invite you al to visit.

Hi Ger,
I saw this before but I've been busy. I'm working on this right now...I should have one for you in the next 24 hours.
Nice job by this fellow. I'll see what I can do.
I am looking frward to it. I always assumed that Jack meant there to be white cliffs on the right... until I visited Omaha Beach two years agon and saw there weren't any...

Whew! That was fun but work! Took a little longer than I expected, and I still have to add the Kirby detail "flourishes" and then add color. But it is done enough to show you.
I need to rest my eyes for a day and then I'll see if adding Kirby style "hay" to the figures does anything to make it look better. You can see it at my art blog, link/web address above.

Looking great already... it's amazing to see how much Kirby provided witht those simple (?) pencils...
Kirby obviously had an amazing sense for layout and design. I think this would have been a fantastic cover. After thinking about it, this cover reminds me of another Kirby would do about 9 years later...

Looking at this in retrospect I see my first take on the water went way overboard. Kirby took a simpler approach.
I will add that Fury cover to the post... the boats are a very smart addition, I think...
