Many comic strip artists didn't come out of nowhere. Some had previous careers as cartoonists, animators, comic book artists or worked in advertising. Others had another comic strip before they found the one that made them famous.Irving Philips had a run of the mill kids comic strip called Scuffy in the early fifties. Eight years later he hit the jackpot with Mr. Mum (which I wouldn't mind seeing collected). Looking back on it, you do see Mr. Philips talent for silent gags.
