Calling All Craigs

Thursday Story Strip Day.

Craig Yoe has announced a new horror collection in his series from IDW, this one featuring the work of Tom Sutton. When he was still in the service, he did a daily newspaper strip for the Pacific Stars and Stripes. You can see he's still a beginner when he starts in February 1958, but in the last fews strips from October his own style emerges. I got these nice big clean scans from the collection at newspaper.com and I am sorry I didn't get all of them before I had to discontinue their services because of their new payment and renewel conditions.

Hmm, wonder if Sutton knew EC artist Johnny Craig and named the character for him?

"A3C" stood for Airman 3rd Class, the one-stripe rank in the U.S. Air Force in the '50s (two stripes was Airman 2nd Class, three was Airman 1st Class). Nowadays in the USAF, one stripe is an Airman, two is Airman 1st Class, and three is Senior Airman.

I'm sure Sutton was aware of the connection, as spaceman Craig's features were heavily influenced by Johnny Craig's hero faces. Gotta admit it's a good name for an action hero.
