You Don't Know Jack, Do You?

Friday Comic Book Day.

I have always been a fan of Jack Davis' work, especially the early days when he was not yet using wash greys. Like Harvey Kurtzman I feel Davis was at his best when he used a quill pen to ink. Between all the great stuff he did for EC, Mad, Humbug and his own Yak Yak comic from Dell, he did a short stint as a western artist for Stan Lee's Timely. There are more of these stories than you think. Here are just two of them. As with his work for DC, I find that the mix of the serious storytelling and his exaggerated style qorks quite well.

Jack Davis was also the first artist to replace Jack Kirby on RAWHIDE KID when the King was needed to create Marvel's Silver Age of Superheroes and had to leave westerns behind.
