Friday Comic Book Day.
Before John Severin and Bill Elder worked for EC through their pal Harvey Kurtzman, they learned their craft on a lot of stories for several publishers and titles. They did western stories for Prize Comica Westerns, some crime and love stories for Jack Kirby and Joe Simon's titles at Prize and many odd jobs ibetween. Together (Severin on pencils and Elder on inks) they did sone of their best naterial for Standard and none as good as the many stories and covers they did for Standard. The work they did for Real Life particulary stands out as some of the best of their early career.

You don't give a date for the James Reavis story. A western film on this same subject was released in 1950. Vincent Price starred in "The Baron of Arizona" as Reavis, a much fuller (pun intended as this was an early Sam Fuller production) telling of the story.
The date on the comic is October 1951. It probably came out in the summer of 1951, so the Fuller film came first and was most likely the inspiration.
become a fan of your blog
hope some day some Steve roper mike nomad Sundays are there
I don't believe the one pager "Trail Drives" is by Severin and Elder...or either of them individually. Being a big fan of Severin (and especially his work with Elder)I really enjoyed the "steel" story plus I had the opportunity to work in a blast furnace back in 1964 in Duluth, Minnesota.
You are right, Mike. I clipped it along with the others because I think it is an esarly page by by Ross Andru.
More rare Severin and Elder (though seperately) material in my upcoming book from Craig Yoe. Watch this space for announcements!
