End Of The Run

Saturday Story Strip Day.

So there it is. The end of my run of The Saint Sunday strips, drawn by Mike Roy with assistance by Jack Davis. Actually, I think he had left Roy's employ somewehre towards the end. The last Sunday certainly isn't his and I also have my doubts about the two before that. But what a run it was. Next week... Frank Thorne!

Ger: In connection with one of the interesting artists you have showcased on the later "Saint" strips, whether you were aware that John Spranger had some kind of nervous breakdown during his career. I was surprised to come across this in a late 1990's New Yorker article online ("Forms stretched to their limits") which only briefly mentioned this as it focussed on Jack Cole and a stable of artists who worked under extreme pressure (although not necessarily in connection with comic strip work). I only mention this because you noted in an earlier blog that at the end of Spranger's run with the Saint he seemed to disappear without a trace - I wonder if there is a connection here. I apologize if you already referred to this in an entry I may have missed.

Interesting. The period you suggest might be the one. He dropped from The Saint pretty quickly. There was some scrambling. Bob Lubbers took over for a period, while he was also still doing Long Sam as well. I have been told there was a week of Fleissel after he left and Doug Wildey took over. So it sort of fits.
