Confusing Commercialism

Saturday Leftover Day

In the forties Virgil Partch was a very popular commercial artist as well as a catoonist. He was usually asked to do one of his absurd jokes for the ads. I may have shown some of these before in online copies, but this time they are all my own scans.

It appears to me Virgil Partch's work has a hint of Basil Wolverton's style to them, notably in the second panel with the man calling attention to the model in Esquire Magazine.
Again, just a hint of the spaghetti and meatball style that Wolverton perfected.

Influences are sometimes hard to catch. I mean, Partch himself was an influence himself on Johnny Hart (or at least, he said so in his interview with Hogan's Alley). I myself see a lot of similarity also to the work of the Italian comic master Jacovitti, who was influenced by... Elzie Segar. And wasn't Wolverton influenced by Sgat as well?
