Show 'M What You Got

Monday News Day.

I am not really a fan of Machamer's cartoon style, which is too fussy for me. And his Gags and Gals type of humor is a little bit outdated for me. BUt for a short period het included a gag in each of his full pages Sunday pages and that's fun, don't you think?

I blow hot and cold on Machamer. He draws quite well but the odd way he inks clothing and hair spoils it for me. All the extraneous squiggles make it look like the men never comb their hair and everyone, men and women alike, have slept in their clothes.

Jefferson Machamer’s reputation for cartoons of pretty girls in “Gags & Gals” of the ’30’s and (which I would like to see) his contributions to Judge magazine of the late ’20’s reminds one, with his somewhat loose style, of Charles Voight, the latter known as the “girl specialist” with his strip “Betty” (he also supposedly contributed illustrations to Life magazine) of the ‘teens and twenties. Machamer’s style has been called (perhaps more charitably) “breezy”, and Voight’s a “free pen technique”.
