Saturday Leftover Day. Here is a short run of Thimble Theatre dailies with regular character Castor Oil trying to commit suicide. You sometimes see samples of suicide related stories from artist who actually did commit suicide later in life. Jack Cole is an example of one such artists, who used a lot of suicide gags. On the other hand, that may not foreshadow anything, because as these gags show, the theme was a lot more common in the insensitive twenties.

Merry Christmas Ger - with respect, looking at the 2nd panel of the first sample appears to confirm it's Castor Oyl. Reviewing the early Popeye years of the Fantagraphics volumes, some of which feature Castor, impresses you with a dark and eccentric but brilliant cartoonist mind in Segar. Stay safe.
