Bat Masterson

Wednesday Advertising Day

Only one item today. I love these comic film ads and I am surprised I didn't know about them. Apparently they were quite a few. I have shown three of these earlier, including one from the Cary Grant/Shirley Temple film The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer.

If I had to guess I'd say this add is by Leonard Starr. Follow the tag for Cary Grant to find the others.

From Feb 23 1947, by the way:

Of more recent vintage, I remember seeing comic film ads for the 1986 movie Jake Speed in the L.A.Times.
Don't remember if he signed them or not but they were drawn by Ron Harris who earlier in that decade had done the Star Trek and Dallas comic strips.

I can't believe you (or anyone else) actually saw those Jake Speed ads. In fact, they were signed and I signed them.

The movie was a violent stinker, written by, directed by and starring a guy one reviewer described as having all the charisma of a can of tuna.

This is a beautiful job, by the way. I wonder how they figured anyone would want to see the movie after they gave away the ending in the last panel (the good guy won! Who'd have guessed?)

The most famous one was the serialized version Alex Toth did for How To Murder Your Wife. I have one more western ad, which I'll try and get ready by saturday.
