The Singing Cowboy Strip
Thursday Newspaper Strip Day.
Alex Toth will need no introuction to comi strip art and comic book fans. His work in the forties was an inspiration to a whole genertion of artists at DC and elsewhere. When he returned from a stint in the army, he reinvented himself as the best chiascuro artist ever. He worked mainly for Dell and ended up at Hanna-Barbera, doing designs for scores of cartoons that were never as good as his style sheets. In between he did little jobs here and ther, like hese three weeks of substituting for Mike Arens on Roy Rogers. Three weeks that had never seen before, so here they are.
The first and last two strips are (probably) by Arens. Toth seems to have done his own lettering as well. At least that is the most recognizable thing from te start. It takes a while for him to insert his own style, but when he does it really takes off. He even seems to have signed the Arens name in his own hand.

Hallo Ger,ik wilde je bedanken voor
het indrukwekkende artikel in
Alter Ego # 86.
Helaas. Heb er het geduld niet voor. Ben n kind uit de jaren 50. Wil alles gewoon op papier in mn handen. Succes, ook met je tv werk. Kijk nooit naar vaderlandse comedy. Zal Single eens proberen. Ik groet u.
