When Losers Ruled The Earth

Tuesday Comic Strip Day.

Sharing Al Jaffee's Tall Tales with you yesterday reminded me how much I love Hanan's Louie. This gentle but consistant silent strip ran for more than twenty years from somewhere in the forties until at least well into the sixties. Unlike some silent strip character Louie isn't an observer but an active albeit somewhat bitter participant in his gags. Hanan never has to serort to cheap absurdism to create a gag, instead milking new situations day after day from the same basic set of principles.
