Norris Dance

Saturday Leftover Day.

Fellos Yahoo groupie Norris Burroughs asked if he remembered right that he had seen Al Williamson's work in Dell's Gunsmoke series when he was much much younger. I had a look nd found that indeed the great EC and Agent X9 artist did do a series of fillers for that title from #8 to #12. The third one was inked by Reed Crandell and by #13 the feture was taken over by Marvin Stein. Here is what I could find. Happy memories, Norris.

Ger, thanks for putting these up... I'll bet I enjoy looking at these as much as Norris!

A minor typo... You have Crandall on the third, rather than the second story.

I meant the third of the five Willaimson did... which is the second one here.

Nice to see these. Methinks the story from #10 is the other way around; the poses and close-up faces are so typically Crandall that I'm sure it's Williamson inking Crandall. They split up the work in the same way for some Harvey s-f shorts...these may have been produced about the same time.

Smurf... that was my first impression, too. After I read the GCD attribution, I didn't have a second look. I did just now and there is no doubt. It's Crandell on pencils and Williamson on inks.

I had a look at Have Gun, Will Travel, which Norris remembered being by Williamson as well and found that it could be by him, but the inking looked just a little bit less fine-lined. My old rule of identifycation is, if it could be someone, it usually isn't so I ooked at the GCD and they gave it to Albert Giolitti...
