Carl vs the Reiner

Friday Comic Book Day.

My post yesterday about Merrie Chase got more response on Carl Hubbell than Paul Reinman. For those of you not familiar wth Hubbel's work, here are all of his Bob Brant stories for Man Comics. He did a similar strip for Gleason before this and this is clearly an attempt to try ad grab some of those younger readers.

I can't say there's anything bad about Hubbell's work, but I just don't connect with his approach.

These kids look like the same bunch he drew at Gleason with new hair-dos.

Yep, he is best taken in small doses. I guess even the stories are similar to the Gleason ones, since his wife used to write for him. Together they did a few great stories for Whack. I wonder what became of him after the mid fifties.

Ah, I see he did Rusty and Sky Ranger for his own company Good Comics in 1955. I have one of those Rusty books somewhere. Sky Ranger was signed Edmond Good or something like that, but at least of one those covers looks like Hubbell's own work.

I was wrong. Edmond Good is an actual artist. I should have remembered his name as the Scorchy Smith artist who took over from Robbins for a short time in the midforties.

According to some sources Good Comics was a publishing title for Gleason. They did use a lot of the same artists (except for Edmond Good). But why would Good publish Rusty? Anyway, I have gathered some stuff from Good and Gleason by Hubbel from that period and will show more tomorrow (today, actually).

In the early Marvel Superhero days, Hubbell did a couple of stories. I believe he penciled a Giant Man story beneath the house style (Kirby layouts, Ayers inks). Lambiek says he inked some Sgt. Fury and Rawhide Kid.
He also signed a story for Milson's splitting Captain Marvel.
