Momentary Lapse

Monday Cartoon Day.

I like Krazy Kat. I'd be crazy not to. But as goo as it is, I always feel it's too bad it is about animals rather than humans. Must be some sort of private thing, but whenever I see one of these Embarrasing Moments cartoons Herriman did on and off between 1929 and 1932, my heart really starts racing. Now there's a series that needs collecting...

Note that Herriman drew the chicken thief as a black man when he himself had biracial parents. (Probably more just a product of the times than anything.)

Joecab: As late as the 1950s, when I was growing up, the standard image of a "chicken thief" was a poor black man swiping chickens from someone's coop. It's amazing how many times the stereotype appeared in cartoons, comics, and music during the early 20th century. I even have an old correspondence school art pamphlet which demonstrates how to present a "chalk talk" with a stunt based on such a chicken thief.
