Obsciascure

Wednesday Illustration Day.

I was talking to some comic artist friend about Noel Sickles and found I had a couple of his later ilustratons I hadn't shared yet. So here correcting that.

He also did many drawings for the Reader's Digest, especially illustrating many of their abridged novels that were later collected in book form during the 50's. I have a couple of those, and though I've had them around for years, it was recently I found out they were by Sickles. Even though the illos are signed by him, I didn't know who Sickles was when I was a kid. Uh, I inherited those books from my mother by the way. I'm not that old.

Hm, I'd love to have some titles or possily some scan. These illustrations are not among the best knwn of Sickles' work.

Ger, if I can have your email, or some place else where I can leave the scans, I'll send them to you.

Otherwise look out for the Philadelphian by Richard Powell, The old man and the sea by Hemingway... though come to think about it, maybe the illos do come from the actual books and Reader's Digest simply re-used them for their abridged versions as well. Though every book they published in this abridged form comes with illustrations by some of the greatest of the times; Fawcett, Stahl, Gatti, etc. And RD sold millions of copies every month back in the day, so I guess they could actually pay a good price for the artwork if they bought it directly from the artists.
