What A Goof!

Sunday Surprise Day. As good and historically important as Krazy Kat is, I have a fondness for one of George Herriman's less known features, the daily panel Emberrassing Moments, which ran in the late thirsties. Known for drawing animals, his humans are even better. The only disappointement is the fac that the gags deliver what the title suggests. What is depicted are usually no 'emberrassing moment' but rather an early form of 'bloopers' and other mistakes. I have shown some before, but here is another month.

Wow, he started a new strip in the late 1930's???? I will have to investigate.

How strange and disturbing to see a depiction of the African Dodger carnival game in the 7th strip up top! The concept behind the humour in that "gag" is horrific.

Stefan: I don't thnk he started the panel. Or even if he wrote it.

BK: even more so if you realise that Herriman himself was 'colored'. On the other hand, what is strange about finding out that stuff that actually existed at the time of the cartoon made it into it? I am sure there were gags about people being blown up in WWII cartoons. It's only in. our time that we have blurred the line between 'depiction' and 'approval'.
