The Romance Of Art Spotting

Friday Comic Book Day.

Over at the Digital Comics Museum two regulars calling themselves 'rangerhouse' and 'movielover' have uploaded a whole run of Gleason's romance comic Lovers Lane, donated by Who's Who author Jim Vandeboncoeur Jr., who goes by the internet handle of JVJ. When I came across this story in #37, I immediately thought: that could be the work of Timely regular Allen Bellman. At the end of each of these books the scanners have included the 'credit' card made by Jim, who is pne of the great art spotters around. On it he has the note 'Allen Bellman?'. Now if only Bllman specialist 'Doc' Vassallo could come by and confirm it. Makes me sort of sorry I haven't got a nickname (although someone recently called me 'that fifties guy').

Afer that two ther interesting stories from that run of Lovers Lane, one by George Tuska and one by Carl Pfeuer, whose Bantam Prince was shown here yesterday.

Ger,

That is indeed Allen Bellman in the first story!

And that is from Lovers Lane #37, november 1953. Quite late for Bellman, right?

I have been enjoying this run of "Lover's Lane" at the Museum. One memorable feature of the series is the run of painted covers by Bob Fujitani. Really fine work.
