Adventures In Black And White

Thursday Story Strip Day.

Of all the Milt Caniff followers Mel Graff was one of the oddest, because as much as his early work looks like that of Caniff and Noel Sickles, they never actually worked together on a strip. Graff and Cabiff did work together in the Associated Press Newsroom (as did Sickles) so they were aware of each other's work. But where Sickles was able to influence Caniff (and later work with some of his assistants, like Alfed Andiola and Charles Raab) Graff carved his own way, using whatever he thought was usable and adding it to his own already very talented style. The result, The Adventures of Patsy, which he drew from 1935 to well into the forties, was remarkable and on of the highpoints of that decade.
